B.Sc Industrial Chemistry Programme

A.        Introduction

The B. Sc (Hons.) degree is a four year or a three year degree programme that provides a broad scientific background to prepare students for employment in all types of chemical industries and allied technological fields. Consequently, a lot of emphasis is placed on practical work and industrial training during the course of the programme. Students will undertake two industrial attachments of 12 weeks duration each, the first at 200 level and the second at 300 level. At 400 level, the students will carry out individual research project.

B.        Entry Requirements

  1. The entry requirements shall be at least credit level passes in five subjects at ‘O’ level in one sitting or six credits at not more than two sittings. The credits must include English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics and any of the following subjects: Biology, Agricultural Science or Technical Drawing. In addition, acceptable pass in the UTME into 100 level is required. UTME subjects are English Language, Chemistry, Mathematics and any of Physics, Biology/Agricultural Science. Expected duration for UTME candidates shall be 4 years.
  2. Direct entry candidates must have two ‘A’ level passes in Chemistry and any of Physics, Biology and Mathematics or their equivalents: ND with upper credit in SLT (Chemistry option), IJMB and JUPEB in addition to the requirements in (1) above. Expected duration for Direct Entry candidates shall be 3 years.

C.        Degree Requirements

To be eligible for a B. Sc degree in Industrial Chemistry, a student must pass a minimum of 120 credits with the 4-year degree programme and 90 credits for the 3-year degree programme. The CGPA regulation shall be applied in computation.

D.        Regulation on course selection

The Department operates a course unit system in a 2-semester academic year for the B. Sc Honours degree. Students are required to take a list of approved courses and register for minimum of 15 credits and maximum of 24 credits in each semester.

E.        Assessment Policy

All the courses are examined by Continuous Assessment (practical and tests) and end of semester examination. Continuous Assessment carries a minimum of 30% while the end of semester examination carries a maximum of 70%. The pass mark for a course is 45%. External examiners moderate the 400 level examinations and the overall results are determined in accordance to the general regulation governing the award of degrees.
