BISHOP ODUNTAN ENCOURAGES ASAJU, ADMONISHES CONFIRMATION CANDIDATES

The Vice-Chancellor of Ajayi Crowther University, Rt. Rev. Professor Dapo F. Asaju, has been urged to remain focused in his bid to transform the University, and not be discouraged by the challenges he faces in the process. Making the comment at the confirmation service held in Crowther Hall of the University, yesterday, Rt. Reverend Olugbenga Oduntan , Bishop of Ajayi Crowther Diocese of Church of Nigeria, [Anglican Communion], remarked that even the great Nigerian evangelist , Ajayi Crowther, who became the first African to be consecrated a bishop, faced persecution and challenges. He noted that 129 years after his demise, Bishop Ajayi Crowther, is being remembered for his pioneering work in evangelism in all parts of Nigeria and beyond. Oduntan told Asaju to remain focused in birthing the numerous developmental projects in the University, assuring him that history will be kind to him in the long run. Oduntan told the students to adhere to the discipline being instilled in them by the Vice-Chancellor and his team, saying they would be grateful later in life for the opportunity of going through that process.

Oduntan spoke while delivering the sermon titled ‘New life’ at the church service where 40 students of Ajayi Crowther University, and 18 students of Lord’s Group of schools, Ilora, where Oduntan is Proprietor, where confirmed. He told the congregation that confirmation is public declaration of a decision to follow Christ. Taking his text from 2 Corinthians 5:16-17 , he said old things in the life of those being confirmed should be passed away. He told them that they have become regenerated, and now have a new life. He advised them to submit their will to Jesus, learn from Him, and ensure that they do not lose the power that has been imparted to them through the laying on of hand by the bishop.

Earlier Rt. Rev. Dapo Asaju, Vice-Chancellor and Bishop Theologian of Church of Nigeria[Anglican Communion], had laid hands on the confirmation candidates, making them eligible to receive Holy Communion. After the service, the Vice-Chancellor admonished to students to be of good character because the University would not lower its disciplinary standards for anybody. He announced that those whose Cumulative Grade Point Average [CGPA] fall within first Class and second class upper degree, would be rewarded with cash gifts and designated as University Scholars. He encouraged them to work hard in order to come out in flying colours. Amongst those who attended the service include, Professor Jacob Adeniyi, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Pastor Samson Olojede, University Bursar, Barrister[Mrs.] Harriet Dapo- Asaju, Deputy University Librarian and wife of the Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Mrs. Felicia Oduntan, wife of Bishop Oduntan and lecturer in the Faculty of Education in the University, amongst other staff and some parents of the students.
