ACU TEAM VISITS OYO PRISON, ENCOURAGES INMATES

A delegate from Ajayi Crowther University yesterday visited the Medium Security Prison in Abolongo, Oyo Town in Oyo State. The visit was part of the activities to mark the 10th Convocation ceremony of the University.

The 14-man team was led by Professor O.O Akinnawo, Chairman of the Ceremonials Committee of the University. The team interacted with workers and inmates. In her address to the inmates, Professor O.O Akinnawo told them that the team came with the permission of the Vice-Chancellor, Rt. Rev. Professor Dapo Asaju, to encourage them and assure them that being an inmate was not the end of the road for them. She told them that their dark days will be over and they should brace up to be re-integrated to the society.

Delivering an exhortation at the event, Ven. Dr. Olanrewaju Ogidiolu, who represented the University Chaplain, told them to surrender their lives to Jesus Christ in order to experience a supernatural intervention that would turn their situations around in a positive way.

While receiving the team, Deputy Superintendent of Prisons Taiwo Daodu thanked the team for coming and said the Prisons facilities were overstretched. He said the facility, which was built to take 160 inmates, currently has 446 inmates. 73 of the inmates, according to him, are convicts, while the others are awaiting trial. He appealed to the University to help equip their Library and offer admission to some of the inmates who are qualified. He revealed that some of the inmates are being help for their inability to pay fines imposed on them by the court and appealed to the University and well-meaning members of the public and individuals to help pay off the fines, in order to get the affected inmates released, and decongest the prison.

The team donated food items and toiletries to the inmates. Some members of the team include Professor O. Adediran, Dean of Postgraduate School, Dr. Bolanle Sogunro, Dr. Paul Akanbi, Mrs. Oso, Mrs. Alabi, Mrs. Alaba and others.
