New council moves to improve amenities
In line with its resolve to make the University one of the best 1000 in the world, the new Governing Council of Ajayi Crowther University, led by Chief Dr. Toyin Okeowo, has moved to improve amenities in the University. On the second day of a two-day meeting, the council chairman led some members to lay the foundation for the ultra-modern Entrepreneurship Centre near the Vice-Chancellor’s office. Rising from its two-day meeting last Wednesday, the Chairman announced that within the next two months, fiber optics will be laid in the campus to make for a stable internet facility. The chairman said arrangements have reached an advanced stage to lay the optics and activate round-the-clock access to the internet. He said it has become imperative to make internet access constant on campus to help staff and students with their work and studies.
He also took members to another site where a storey building is under construction to be used as classroom blocks and offices for Professors and other categories of staff. The place was meant for four large classrooms but the chairman advised that it be made raised, to take care of future expansion and to maximize space.
The council also approved the construction of two more hostels to take care of the increasing number of students in the University. The chairman said the new hostels, one each for boys and girls, became expedient given the University’s policy that all undergraduate students must be residents on campus. The campus residency policy is geared at ensuring that the moral and spiritual lives of the students are monitored to ensure that they turn out as godly intellectuals in accordance with the University’s mantra of raising godly intellectuals. Dr. Okeowo tasked the Department of Performing Arts in the University to produce a movie about the first African to be consecrated bishop, Samuel Ajayi Crowther, whom the University is named after. He promised to source funding for the project.
The council also approved the procurement of laptops for all staff and students, stating that it was imperative for them to be equipped for the digital world, stating that it was important, given the desire to automate activities in the University.
Dr. Okeowo stated that a research fund has been made available for staff and invited postgraduate students of the University to encourage research and collaboration between the University and industries. He pledged that the University Governing Council would do all within its capacity to take the University to the next level.
