ACU VC ASSURES STUDENTS OF SAFETY ON CAMPUS, AS SENATE ANNOUNCES JUNE 13 AS EXAMS DATE
Ajayi Crowther University (ACU) Vice Chancellor, Prof. Timothy Abiodun Adebayo has assured students of the institution of their safety on campus, saying security has been beefed up to guarantee peaceful learning environment.
Prof. Adebayo who addressed the students during the weekly fellowship held at Crowther Hall, dismissed the propaganda on social media that the campus may be invaded by certain people, following the death of a 200 level Mechanical Engineering student, Mr. Akpo Alex who was beaten to death by some students in his hostel on alleged phone theft.
According to the VC, “I want to assure you that your safety is guaranteed on this campus. We have done everything in this regard. Some of you may have noticed the presence of some security men in some strategic locations on campus. This is for your safety. We have met with the family of the slain student. The family has come around to see things for themselves. It is an unfortunate incident nobody foresaw. Therefore, don’t allow anyone to instill fear in you. Nobody is planning to invade our campus”
Prof. Abiodun who directed the mammoth congregation to observe a-minute silence in honour of the murdered student before he began his remarks, restated that the university would ensure that justice is done in respect of the death of Mr. Alex, pointing out that the 12 student-suspects who allegedly participated in the beating of the deceased student as well as the porter attached to the hall were still with the police as investigations were yet to be concluded.
Urging students to promptly alert officers of the university in case of any strange behaviour in their various hostels, Prof. Adebayo enjoined the students to avoid fighting in any disguise, insisting that no student is allowed to take laws into his hands, rather, “report anyone who has offended you or who is threatening you to us and I can assure you that you will get justice”, he stressed.
The fellowship which was garnished with fasting and prayers for the university and the students attracted a large number of students and staff of the university with the preachers encouraging the participants to seek the face of God in prayer regarding difficulties of life.
Meanwhile, the Senate of the university has announced June 13 as the date for the commencement of the second semester examinations.
At its meeting held at Wole Olanipekun Lecture Theatre, the senate which reviewed various developments in the school, unanimously decided that the second semester examinations should start by June 13, just as it set up a panel of enquiry to investigate the immediate and remote causes of the beating that led to the death of Mr. Alex.
