B.Sc Biochemistry Programme
(a) Introduction
The B. Sc. (Hons.) degree is a four year programme or a three-year programme in Biochemistry that provides the graduate with a broad scientific background in preparation for a successful career in a variety of occupations as outlined in the Philosophy and Objectives. It provides a solid academic base upon which to build more advanced degrees (M. Sc; Ph. D) if so desired. The Department places adequate emphasis on theoretical knowledge as well as practical work in the laboratories. Compulsory Industrial Trainings are organized during long vacations for all 200 and 300 level students. At 400 level, students carry out individual research projects.
(b) Entry Requirements
- Students intending to major in Biochemistry must satisfy the University and Faculty of Natural Sciences admission Such students must have five credits at ‘O’level at one sitting or six credits at not more than two sittings. The credits must include English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics and Biology. In addition, an acceptable pass in the UTME is required for admission into 100 Level. Expected duration for UTME candidates shall be 4 years.
UTME subjects are: English Language, Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Mathematics.
- Direct entry candidates must have two ‘A’ level passes in Chemistry, and Biology or their equivalents: ND with a minimum of upper credit in SLT (Biochemistry option), IJMB and JUPEB in addition to the requirements in (1) above must be Expected duration for Direct Entry (DE) candidates shall be 3 years.
(c) Degree Requirements
To be eligible for a B.Sc. degree in Biochemistry, a student must pass a minimum of 120 credits within the 4-year degree programme and 90 credits for the 3-year degree programme, 60 of which must be from Biochemistry courses. The CGPA regulation shall be applied in computation of results
(d) Regulation on Course selection
The Department operates a course unit system in a 2-semester academic year for the B. Sc Honours degree. Students are required to take a list of approved courses and register for a minimum of 15 credits and a maximum of 24 credits in each semester.
(e) Assessment Policy
All courses taught during a semester are examined at the end of that semester and candidates earn credits assigned to the course for which they have passed. The pass mark for a course is forty- five percent (45%). All the courses are examined by a combination of Continuous Assessment (practical and tests) and end of course examinations. Continuous Assessment carries a minimum of 30%, while the Examination carries a maximum of 70%. External Examiners moderate the 400 level examinations. The overall results are determined in accordance with the general regulation governing the award of degrees in the university.
