B.Sc. (Hons) Physics
The B.Sc. (Hons) degree in Physics is a four-year Programme (for UME candidates) and a three-year programme for direct entry candidates respectively. The programme provides graduates with a broad scientific background in preparation for a successful career in a variety of occupations as outlined in the philosophy and objectives. It also provides in the process, a solid academic base upon which to build more advanced degree (M.Sc., Ph.D.) if so desired.
The programme places much emphasis on practical work in the laboratories and during the Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES).
Entry Requirements
Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME)
a) Credits at SSCE, GCE, NECO or approved equivalent in at least 5 subjects which must include English, Mathematics and Physics and any other three subjects as may be specified by the Faculty. [Physics, Chemistry, and any other science].
b) The 5 Credits should be obtained at one sitting or six (6) credits in not more than two sittings.c) All Applicants are required to obtain a satisfactory scores in JAMB before they can qualify for the screening exercise.
Direct Entry
a) National Diploma (ND) at adequate credit level, Nigerian Certificate in Education (NCE) at appropriate Credit level
b) Two advanced Level Subjects in Mathematics, Electronics, Physics or related subjects;
c) The Interim Joint Matriculations Board (IJMB) at acceptable grade level in Mathematics, Electronics and Physics.
d) In addition to the two relevant Advanced Level papers, candidates must have credits in three other relevant Ordinary Level subjects.
Departmental Requirements
Ordinary Level subjects
The five Ordinary level subjects must include; English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and any other one science subject.
UME Subjects
English Language, Mathematics, Physics and any other one science subject.
Direct Entry Subjects
G.C.E Advanced Level IJMB/NCE/ND and approved equivalents Mathematics, Physics and Physics with Electronics with three other O’level related subjects would be accepted.
Degree Requirements
To be eligible for single Honours B. Sc. Degree in Physics, a student must pass all the prescribed courses and obtain a minimum of 120 credits within the 4-year degree programme and a minimum of 90 credits within the 3- year degree programme (for direct entry students) respectively. Students are advised to refer to section B of the Academic Programme for details of the departmental graduation requirements.
Regulation on Course Selection
The Department operates a Course Unit system in a 2-semester academic year for the B.Sc. (Honours) degree. Students are normally required to take a list of approved courses and register for not less than 15 units and not more than 24 units in each semester. However, it is not compulsory that a student must register for the maximum course load specified in any semester.
