B.Sc. Mass Communication

The B.Sc. (Hons) degree is a four-year programme for UME candidates and 3 year programme for Direct Entry (DE) candidates in Mass Communication. The programme provides the graduate with a broad communication/media background in preparation for a successful career in a variety of occupations as outlined in the philosophy and objectives. It also
provides in the process a solid academic base upon which to build more advanced degrees (MA, Ph.D.) if so desired.

The Department places much emphasis on practical work in the studios, newsroom, press and on the field. Compulsory industrial attachments are organized for 300-level undergraduates.

Entry Requirements

1. Students intending to major in Mass Communication must satisfy the University and the Faculty of Social and Management Sciences requirements. Such students must have had a minimum of five credits at the ordinary level of the General Certificate of Education which must include credits in English Language, Literature-in-English, and any two Arts/Social Science subjects and a pass in Mathematics in one sitting or six credits at not more than two sittings.

2. For a direct entry, “A” level pass or its equivalent in Literature in English, and any other one subject from the Arts/Social Sciences in addition to the requirements in (1) above.

Degree Requirements

To be eligible for a single honours B.Sc. degree in Mass Communication, a student must pass all the prescribed courses and obtain a minimum of 120 credits within the 4-year degree programme and 90 credits within the 3-year degree programme.

Regulation and Course Selection

The Department operates a course credit system in a 2-semester academic year for the B.Sc. (Hons.) degree. Students are required to take a list of approved courses and register for not less than 15 credits and not more than 24 credits in each semester.
