MATHEMATICS IS DOORWAY FOR ACCESSING OTHER SUBJECTS AND STUDY AREAS- Dr Binuyo
Dr Adeyemi Binuyo of the Department of Physical Sciences of Ajayi Crowther University has described Mathematics as the doorway for accessing other subjects and study areas. He said this during the second Faculty Lecture series titled “the significance of mathematical modeling in epidemiology with particular reference to infectious diseases among infants” which was held on May 8, 2014 at the University Auditorium
According to him mathematical models are powerful tools predicting the behavior of infectious diseases among infants within a population.
The Lecturer said that the spread of infectious diseases among infants in our society has always been a great challenge to public health, and to prevent or control infectious diseases more effectively is to fully understand the mechanism of the spread mathematical model which is an activity of translating a real life problem into mathematical equations for subsequent analysis of the real problem.
According to Dr Binuyo, a disease is infectious if causative agents whether a virus, Bacterium, protozoa or toxin passed from one host to another through modes of transmission such as physical contacts, water or food, mother to new borns and so on.
he further stated that examples of infectious diseases among the infants include measeales, chicken pox, mumps, small pox (poliomyelitis) and so on.
Dr Binuyo stressed that the purpose of mathematical modeling are:
- To be used to theoretically evaluate, compare or optimize various prevention therapy and control programs
- Modeling can be used in comparing diseases of different types in different populations
- Models provide structures for organizing and cross checking diverse pieces of information
He advised hospital management boards to introduce courses on the transmission dynamics of diseases, employing some mathematical contents in the training of medical doctors and other associated with public health.
The lecturer enjoined the three tiers of government in Nigeria to intensify efforts on the contribution among health workers, statiscians, epidemiologists, and mathematicians.
He therefore urged the institution to have the department of mathematical sciences to enable students have a broad knowledge of mathematical modeling and stimulation, and to be of benefits to the country in general as mathematics is an incontestable door way and major key for accessing and strengthen all other subjects and study area.
