ACU Celebrates BOT Chairman, Chief Wole Olanipekun’s 50 Years of Legal Excellence, Hails His Transformative Philanthropy
The Vice-Chancellor, Ajayi Crowther University (ACU), Oyo, Prof. Ebunoluwa Oduwole, has extended heartfelt congratulations to Chief Wole Olanipekun OFR, CFR, SAN, Chairman of the university’s Board of Trustees, on the occasion of his golden jubilee as a legal practitioner, marking 50 years of distinguished service to the legal profession and the nation.
In a congratulatory letter addressed to the legal icon, Prof. Oduwole, writing on behalf of the Governing Council, Senate, staff, and students of Ajayi Crowther University, described Chief Olanipekun’s five decades of unflinching service as “no ordinary milestone” but rather “a testament to extraordinary brilliance, unwavering integrity, and an enduring commitment to justice and excellence.”
The Vice-Chancellor noted that since his call to the Nigerian Bar in July 1976 and his attainment of the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) in 1991, Chief Olanipekun has consistently demonstrated that law is not merely a profession but a noble calling dedicated to the defence of truth, justice, and the rule of law.
Prof. Oduwole highlighted Chief Olanipekun’s monumental contributions to Nigeria’s democratic development, noting that his successful handling of landmark constitutional cases has strengthened the nation’s jurisprudence and deepened democracy.
The letter also commended Chief Olanipekun as the former President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and former Chairman of the Body of Benchers for his exemplary leadership of the legal profession. Through his service on the National Judicial Council, the Council of Legal Education, and the Legal Practitioners Privileges Committee, Chief Olanipekun has shaped the legal profession with wisdom, fairness, and an unwavering commitment to judicial independence.
She emphasised that what makes this golden jubilee particularly significant to the ACU community is not merely Chief Olanipekun’s towering professional achievements but his remarkable and transformative contributions to the institution.
“As our Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council from 2013 to 2022, and now as the Chairman of our Board of Trustees, you have provided exemplary leadership, strategic direction, and unwavering support that have elevated Ajayi Crowther University to greater heights,” she wrote.
The Vice-Chancellor catalogued the legal luminary’s philanthropic interventions at the university, including the Wole and Lara Olanipekun Vice-Chancellor’s Lodge, a multi-million naira ultra-modern residential facility donated alongside his wife, Omolara; the Wole Olanipekun Lecture Building, a whole block of Classrooms which is a main block for teaching and learning in ACU; over ₦300 million in financial contributions toward the construction of major campus halls and institutional projects; a personal contribution of ₦10 million for flood relief in 2011; generous scholarship programmes and financial aid for seminarians and indigent students; and strategic guidance that has strengthened the university’s faith-based identity and physical capacity. She described these interventions as “truly legendary.”
The Vice-Chancellor further acknowledged Chief Olanipekun’s generosity beyond the university. She praised his exemplary mentorship of young lawyers, his devotion to the Anglican faith, and his support for numerous church projects. While acknowledging the national honours he has received, she noted that his true legacy lies beyond titles and awards.
The Vice-Chancellor concluded by offering prayers for the legal icon’s continued good health, divine wisdom, and renewed strength for many more years of impactful service.
Chief Wole Olanipekun OFR, CFR, SAN, was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1976 and attained the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria in 1991. He served as the 20th President of the Nigerian Bar Association (2002–2004) and has held numerous leadership positions, including Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of the University of Ibadan, Pro-Chancellor of Ajayi Crowther University, and Chairman of the Governing Council of the University of Lagos.
