ACU Drivers’ Workshop Day 2: Police, NDLEA, OYRTMA Others Train Participants on Safety, Ethics, Road Usage
Day 2 of the first-ever comprehensive workshop for drivers of Ajayi Crowther University (ACU), Oyo, marks the conclusion of the workshop, with intensive sessions on road safety, professional ethics, and drug awareness from security agencies and traffic management authorities.
The two-day programme, themed “Enhancing Road Safety, Ethical Policing and Professional Driving Skills,” brought together key stakeholders including the Nigeria Police Force, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA), and members of the university administration to equip drivers with essential skills and knowledge.
Speaking on behalf of the police formation, Chief Superintendent of Police, CSP Ignatius Inyang, stressed the importance of defensive driving and responsible conduct among drivers. He described defensive driving as a proactive approach focused on preventing crises and accidents before they occur.
CSP Inyang urged drivers to remain highly observant, stressing the need to be sensitive to unusual sounds from their vehicles which could indicate mechanical faults. He also encouraged motorists to drive with consideration for other road users, noting that roads are shared spaces requiring mutual respect and cooperation.
The University Bursar, Dr. Ayodele Olusanwo, charged drivers to maintain high standards of confidentiality, discretion, and truthfulness in discharging their duties. He noted that drivers often have access to sensitive information, making it imperative to uphold strict confidentiality at all times.
The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Prof. Olukayode Binuyo, outlined a guiding framework using the acronym “DRIVERS” to reinforce key values such as Discipline, Responsibility, Integrity, Vigilance, Excellence, Respect, and Safety. He emphasised that consistent application of workshop teachings would enhance road safety and professionalism across the university.
The Deputy Area Commander of the NDLEA, Oyo Area Command, Assistant Commander of Narcotics, Duro Aiyenugba, cautioned drivers against drug abuse, highlighting its dangerous effects on road safety. He warned against alcohol consumption before or during driving, noting that such behaviour impairs judgment and increases accident risks. He urged drivers to remain content with legitimate earnings and steer clear of illicit activities.
Superintendent Oladele Aremu, delivering his presentation on behalf of the NSCDC Area Commander, emphasised that every driver must possess Concentration, Control, Consciousness, Courtesy, and Common Sense to ensure safety while driving.
Commander Eyitayo Olonade of the OYRTMA Oyo Zonal Command stressed strict adherence to traffic signs and signals, lane discipline, and appropriate speed limits. He also advised drivers to maintain a neat appearance and professionalism to distinguish responsible drivers.
The Director, Works and Services, ACU, Engr. Oluwole Olaniyi, concluded with emphasis on professional ethics, accountability, and emotional intelligence. He recommended using digital tools such as Google Maps to improve efficiency and reduce travel time. Highlights of the workshop included a quick test on real-life driving scenarios under the direct supervision of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ebunoluwa Oduwole, while certificates of participation were presented to all drivers at the end of the session.
