Mgt. Reviews N45m Research Grant Proposals, Prioritises Societal Impact
In a significant step toward fostering academic excellence and addressing Nigeria’s pressing challenges, the management of Ajayi Crowther University (ACU), Oyo, has convened a crucial meeting with all applicants for the second edition of the Ajayi Crowther University Council Research Grant (ACUCRG 2).
The meeting, a hallmark of the University’s commitment to transparency and accountability, focused on refining research proposals to ensure they have tangible societal impact.
Chaired by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ebunoluwa Oduwole, the session was a robust engagement, in which the panel meticulously queried the details of each submission. The atmosphere was one of rigorous academic scrutiny and constructive mentorship, aimed at moulding the projects into winning, solution-driven research.
It should be recalled that a total of N45,000,000 (Forty-Five Million Naira) was approved by the university’s Governing Council, under the leadership of Dr. Olutoyin Okeowo, for these grants to be competed for by scholars from the University. This initiative is part of the council’s broader effort to reposition ACU as a leading academic hub in Nigeria, encouraging both teaching and research among its scholars.

The proposals presented covered a wide range of contemporary issues, reflecting the university’s multidisciplinary research capacity. They include studies on mental health, such as “Qualitative Analysis and Modelling of Depression Prevalence Among Tertiary Students in South-West Nigeria,” led by Prof. Olukayode Binuyo, and “Occupational Stress Management Among Security Guards,” by Dr. Job Oluremi Okunoye and his team.
Other key projects include tackling social vices with “Substance Use Among Undergraduates in Selected Faith-Based Universities” by Prof. Michael Olalekan Olatunji, and a focus on agricultural innovation, such as “Prevention of Post-Harvest Losses in Tomatoes” by Dr. Rachael Oluwayemisi Fashogbon and her team.
The diverse list also features groundbreaking technological and environmental projects, including “Design and Implementation of a Robotic System for Environmental Sustainability” by Engr. Dr. Olusayo Adekunle Ajeigbe, and the “Establishment of Ajayi Crowther University Mushroom Cultivation and Research Facility” by Dr. B. M. Popoola.

During the meeting, Prof. Oduwole displayed quintessential leadership by drawing from her wealth of experience to offer advice on how to draft and present winning proposals. She was joined on the panel by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Afolake Olabinwonninu; Prof. Clement Tella from the Department of Chemical Science; Prof. Moses Akiibinu, Dean, Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences; and Prof. Joseph Ibikunle, Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences. Dr. Babajide Ajayi, the Acting Director, Research, Innovation and Linkages, coordinated the applicants as they took turns presenting their proposals.

Prof. Oduwole also seized the opportunity to charge the academics and researchers to ensure that the moral and spiritual formation of students complements academic excellence at the faith-based institution.
The Ajayi Crowther University Council Research Grant (ACUCRG 2) grant is a LAIBONK Research and Development initiative, supported by the University Management under the able leadership of the Pro-Chancellor.
